Mary's Song of Praise

The Reading

Luke 1:46-55

Mary’s Song of Praise

And Mary said,
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
   and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
   Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
   and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
   from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
   he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
   and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
   and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
   in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
   to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

The Reflection

Today is the Feast of the Annunciation, when we celebrate the  incarnation of Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary. It may seem strange to celebrate this moment in the heart of Lent, as we're close to Holy Week. But really--how fitting! the Annunciation helps us remember that God has to come to us and comes to us again and again. In the midst of Lent -- and a global pandemic --  the Annunciation helps us we remember that God has not left us alone to figure it all out; God sent Jesus came to be with us through this and every challenge.

Lord, give us the courage and faith of Mary and help us answer God’s call with willing hearts and songs of praise! Amen
